TIME.CO, Jakarta – The name of the academician Rocky Gerung is currently in the spotlight of the Indonesian people. This is because political observers are reported by a number of voluntary organisations Jokowi for the alleged insult and provocation of President Joko Widodo in Polda Metro Jaya.
“We request the Indonesian police, Kapolda Metro Jaya to be firm, if necessary Rocky Gerung is immediately arrested,” United Indonesia Volunteers General Chairman Lisman Hasibuan said on Tuesday, August 1, 2023.
Earlier, some Jokowi volunteers reported Rocky Gerung to the National Police Criminal Investigation Agency (Bareskrim). However, the report was rejected because there had to be clarification directly from President Jokowi as the injured party.
The Jokowi volunteer organizations that reported Rocky Gerung were Barricade 98, Foreder, Sekber Jokowi Nusantara, ABJ, JPKP, SOLMET, United Indonesia Volunteers, Barisan Pembaruan, AKAR, Indonesia Today (IHI), SEKNAS and Bara JP. They were furious because Rocky was thought to have cursed President Jokowi with harsh words.
“Today we saw the video of Rocky Gerung, and this is a statement that can be classified as an insult, against the president,” said the head of the 98 Barricade, Benny Rhamdani, on Monday, July 31, 2023.
The beginning of the problem
This reporting effort by Rocky Gerung was done based on a viral video recording showing the political observer insulting President Jokowi. In the recording, Rocky Gerung said Jokowi was only thinking about his own interests at the end of his term as president. Rocky also throws some harsh words.
“Self NO as president he will later be a commoner, but Jokowi’s ambition will be to maintain his legacy. He went to China to offer IKN, he went back and forth from coalition to coalition to find clarity about himself,” Rocky said.
“Think only of your own destiny, NO thinking about our destiny,” Rocky continued in the video.

Brief profile
Rocky Gerung is known as an Indonesian political observer, philosopher and academic. He comes from Manado, North Sulawesi and was born on January 20, 1959.
In addition to being active as a public intellectual, Rocky is a YouTube content creator who has more than 1.5 million subscribers on his personal YouTube channel, Rocky Gerung Official. Taking the subject of news and politics, Rocky has been involved as a content creator since 2019.

This 64-year-old man is also one of the founders of the Setara Institute and company at the Association for Education for Democracy (P2D) 2005. According to the official website of the Setara Institute, this organization was founded to dedicate the idea that everyone should be treated equally with respect for diversity, prioritizing to solidarity and upholding human dignity.
According to the p2k.stekom.ac.id page, Rocky Gerung taught at the University of Indonesia for 15 years. He is also the older brother of Grevo Gerung, currently a professor at Sam Ratulangi University.
Educational history
Rocky Gerung started studying at the University of Indonesia (UI) in 1979. At that time, he was a student of the Department of International Relations which is part of the Faculty of Social Sciences. However, he did not complete his education in the major.
This man from Manado actually took another education and chose to enter the Department of Philosophy which is still under the Faculty of Social Sciences. In this department he also managed to graduate and get a degree. During his time as a student, Rocky was known to be close to socialist activists, such as Hariman Siregar and Marsillam Simanjuntak.
Having experience in rhetoric, after graduating from college, Rocky was asked to return to UI and teach in his previous major, the Philosophy Department. Currently, the Department of Philosophy belongs to the Faculty of Science and Culture.
At the department, Rocky became a permanent lecturer until early 2015. However, he had to stop teaching due to Law Number 14 of 2015. In this law, the requirement to become a lecturer must be at least a master’s or have a master’s degree. Meanwhile, Rocky only had a college degree at the time.
It was noted that Rocky Gerung taught several courses while he was a lecturer at the University of Indonesia, such as Political Philosophy, Justice Theory Seminars, and Philosophical Research Methods. He has also taught postgraduate programs and supervised Indonesian artist Dian Sastrowardoyo.
In addition to being a founder of the Setara Institute, Rocky has chaired the School of Social Sciences (SIS). This is a non-formal school under the Padi and Kapas Foundation which educates students to understand social reality in an interdisciplinary way.
