Get to know the mosquito repellent robot made by UGM students
TIME.CO, Jakarta – Besides being synonymous with drought, the dry season is also known as a time when mosquito populations increase. This is considered annoying because mosquito attacks often increase. Mosquito bites that make an itchy and annoying sound make us want to repel mosquitoes. There are various tools and techniques to repel mosquitoes. But now there is Mosquito exterminating robots.
UGM mosquito repellent robot
In 2013 an interesting breakthrough came from Agus Wigardi, a student of Mechanical Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering Gadjah Mada University (UGM), together with his colleagues. They managed to develop a mosquito repellent tool that uses ultrasonic waves.
Quoting ugm.acid, Ultrasonic waves are high-frequency waves that can be heard by some animals, including mosquitoes. This surge makes the mosquitoes feel disturbed and they stay away.
The robot, which they named Robotack-O-Mos, consists of components embedded in a decorative lamp. When the robot is turned on, the lamp umbrella rotates up to 180 degrees and emits ultrasonic waves, repelling mosquitoes.
Not only does it repel mosquitoes, this robot also has a touch of art. On the lampshades there are carvings depicting the uniqueness of Yogyakarta, such as the palace, Merapi mountain and Prambanan temple. This tool is not only effective, but also environmentally friendly. As a result, they won a gold medal in the PIMNAS XXVI event which just took place in Mataram in September 2013.
It is hoped that this tool can help suppress the spread of mosquito-borne diseases, such as dengue, malaria, chikungunya and filariasis, which have claimed many lives in Indonesia. With the use of ultrasonic waves, they hope people can avoid mosquito attacks without the risk of harmful side effects.
How to get rid of mosquitoes
Besides using Robotack-O-Mos, there are several ways that can be done to repel mosquitoes, as mentioned by Call North West. That’s how,
- Remove standing water from flower pots, birdbaths, tarps and all containers in or around your garden that collect standing water
- Remove piles of leaves and debris from patios and gutters, as they can provide places for mosquitoes to hide and breed
- Cover anything that can hold or contain standing water that can’t be moved, such as ponds and boats
- If you’re constantly battling mosquitoes, it may be time to contact a professional pest control company to help you eliminate them and provide an ongoing prevention plan.
The long dry season has indeed become a scourge for increased mosquito activity. However, with simple steps and the right precautions, we can tackle this challenge head-on.
By keeping our environment clean, using natural mosquito repellents and protecting ourselves with the right clothing, we can reduce the risk mosquito bite and disease transmission. Remember, these little precautions can go a long way in keeping the dry season comfortable and mosquito-free.
