The reason why, as a young man in the village, he wanted to develop the area of him and there were very few doctors at that time. Rahmat is from Dusun Lombongan, a remote village in the southern part of West Sulawesi province.

The way to achieve this goal opened when the opportunity to obtain a scholarship to study Medicine in China arose. “But I canceled my trip because the Covid-19 hit and China was the center at that time. Luckily there is MOSMA Ministry of Religion. By canceling my trip to China, I had the opportunity to study in America,” Rahmat said on Thursday, Aug. 24, 2023, as quoted by the Ministry of Religion website.

Rahmat hadn’t thought about trying college in America. The economic conditions of his family were mediocre. His mother is a farmer and housewife, while his father is a retired religious teacher and fisherman.

After graduating from middle school, Rahmat continued his education at the modern Al-Ikhlas Lampoko Islamic College. The location of this pesantren is about 75 km from the village. This typical Indonesian religious education institution has many alumni studying in various universities.

At that time, his dream of becoming a doctor was still on the rise. Realizing that he has many limitations, Rahmat tries harder. He studied harder in order to reach his friends than him. While he was at the pesantren he also learned to organize himself.

“Alhamdulillah, after six years of study, I have become the best graduate. This is certainly a source of pride for a village boy,” he said.

Faculty of medicine failed

The dream of becoming a doctor is getting stronger. Rahmat registered for the 2018 State University Entrance National Selection (SNMPTN) at Hasanuddin University. However, he didn’t graduate from the Medicine course, but from the Mechanical Engineering department.

Though disappointed, Rahmat chose to move forward. Having attended two semesters at Unhas, Rahmat realized that the current major was not what he had dreamed of. He then re-enrolled in Medicine at various entrance routes to state universities. The result is the same, he always gets rejected.

Saturated blow, trendy ideas appear unexpectedly. Grace registers medicines overseas, especially in China. Luckily, Rahmat was stated to have passed a university in China for the MBBS program with a tuition fee scholarship from the local government.

MBBS stands for Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery. This program provides qualifications in both general practice and surgery at the end of the programme.

Rahmat is happy to be accepted there. However, he figured the cost of transportation and living expenses while studying in China must be expensive. Rahmat then looks for a way to still be able to take the opportunity given to him. Unfortunately, after the road was found, Covid-19 was rampant, so he still couldn’t go. Furthermore, China was at that time the epicenter of the spread of the Covid 19.

The path to fulfilling the dream of becoming a doctor is once again steep. Rahmat thought of giving up and going back to the village. However, his parents and siblings kept urging him to stay in college.

In 2021, Rahmat enrolls in a relatively new State Islamic Religious College (PTKIN). The campus is Majene State Islamic College (STAIN), which has only been in operation for four years. Only 45km away, Rahmat chose to stay home so he could accompany his elderly father and mother.
