By reducing waste, BRIN is working on research into coated plastics that are worth recycling

TIME.CO, Jakarta – National Agency for Research and Innovation (BRIN) with industry partners research development plastic in layers or multilayer to make it suitable for recycling in order to reduce the problem of plastic waste that pollutes the environment.

“The results of this research encourage the development of new economic activities based on the processing of multi-layered plastic waste,” said Abdul Muis Hasibuan, a researcher at the BRIN Research Center for Behavioral and Circular Economics in Jakarta on Thursday, Aug. 3, 2023.

Abdul said that the development of food, beverage, pharmaceutical and various cleaning products industries has increased the demand for coated plastics. According to him, the transformation of coated plastic from unsuitable to suitable for recycling is an effort to improve environmental quality.

“The collaboration, which is research into developing a circular economic system based on multilayer plastics suitable for recycling, is helpful in identifying the existing conditions of the multilayer plastics industry, including upstream and downstream linkages,” Abdul said.

BRIN also analyzes the impact of multiple economic, social and environmental effects of the production process of recycled coated plastic and creates business chain development scenarios.

Abdul said the research findings were important in making recommendations for circular economic activity patterns related to the production of coated recycled plastics. He hopes the results of this research can make a significant contribution to reducing Indonesia’s plastic waste problem.

Announcement

Plastic waste management in Indonesia is still a crucial issue because the quantity ranks second after organic waste. According to the Association of Indonesian Aromatics, Olefins and Plastics Industries (INAPLAS), as much as 65 percent is plastic packaging waste or types of coated plastics. Coated plastics that are unsuitable for recycling currently account for 90 percent.

On August 3, 2023 BRIN together with PT Standardization National Certification and PT Sendang Bumi Wastama signed a cooperation agreement for research activities for the development of a circular economy system based on coated recycled plastic at the BRIN office in Gatot Soebroto area , Jakarta.
