While companies can ask for regulatory relaxation, the EU says the 2027 timeframe gives carriers enough time to adapt their product designs to these requirements.
“A portable battery should be considered easily removable by the end user, as it can be removed from the product using a commercially available tool, without requiring the use of a special tool, unless it is provided free of charge with the product,” the rules Read.
The change is part of the EU’s shift towards sustainability. “Batteries are key to the decarbonisation process and the EU’s transition to a zero-emission mode of transport,” said Spanish Minister for Ecological Transition Teresa Ribera.
