A US judge will clear Google Play from the lawsuit filed by 21 million consumers

TIME.CO, Jakarta – A US judge intends to acquit Google from requests class action filed by 21 million consumers who accuse Google of violating federal antitrust laws by overcharging the Google Play app store.

US District Judge James Donato’s decision on Monday in San Francisco could significantly reduce the damages Google, a division of Alphabet (GOOGL.O) could suffer for its distribution of Android mobile apps.

Consumers say they would pay less for apps and enjoy more choice were it not for Google’s alleged monopoly. Google denies the wrongdoing.

Donato said his November 2022 class certification order had to be canceled due to his decision, which was also announced on Monday.

Consumer advocates did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Google and its lawyers did not immediately respond to a similar request.
