History of Unpad

Unpad was founded on September 11, 1957 and was originally based in Bandung. The founding of Unpad cannot be separated from the wishes of the inhabitants of Bandung city who desire higher education in various scientific disciplines.

In the 1950s, several well-known universities actually existed. Such as the Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences which are part of the University of Indonesia (UI), the Teacher Education College (PTPG), up to the Bandung Institute of Technology, founded in 1920.

Unpad was then established after the city of Bandung at that time held the Asia-Africa Conference in 1955. Then on 14 October 1956, the Committee for the Establishment of State University (PPUN) was formed in Bandung.

The commission established a delegation composed of prof. Muh. Yamin, Mr. Sonardi, Mr. Bushar Muhammad and many other West Java community leaders. The task of the delegation itself is to convey to the government the aspirations of the people to establish a state university in Bandung.

Finally, through the Ministerial Decree PPK n. 11181/S of 2 February 1957, decided to establish the State Committee for the Establishment of State Universities (PNPUN) in the city of Bandung.

Subsequently, on 25 August 1957, the Workers’ Corps (BP) and the PNPUN were formed, chaired by the then governor of West Java, R. Ipik Gandamana. Accordingly, on Wednesday 11 September 1957, Padjadjaran University (Unpad) came into existence on the basis of the inauguration of PP No. 37 of 1957 on 18 September 1957 (LN RI No. 91 of 1957).

The name “Padjadjaran” comes from the name of the Sunda Kingdom, namely Sunda Padjadjaran, which was led by Prabu Siliwangi from 1473 to 1513 AD. This name was taken because it was considered the most popular among the people of West Java.

Transfer to Jatinangor

Since 1977, Unpad acquired suitable land and then agreed to move to Jatinangor in 1979. Unpad then shifted its educational activities to Jatinangor gradually since 1983. The initiative was started by the Faculty of Agriculture, then followed by other faculties.

The idea of moving Unpad to Jatinangor itself was proposed by the sixth Chancellor of Unpad, Hindersah Wiraatmadja, who was inspired by the academic city of Tsukuba. He started “Manglayang Academic City” which is located in Jatinangor.

The Jatinangor area where Unpad is located was then approved by the Governor of West Java through West Java Governor’s Decree No. 593/3590/1987 with an area of 3,285.5 hectares, divided into 7 designated areas. The Unpad Chancellor Building then officially moved to Jatinangor on 5 January 2012.
