3 special needs students win gold and silver medals in international events

TIME.CO, Jakarta – A total of three students with special needs (PDBK) won medal gold and silver at the 13th Salon Culinaire 2023 which will be held from 25 to 28 July 2023 at the Jakarta International Expo (JIExpo). This international competition is one of the events of the World Association of Chefs Societies (Worldchefs), a global network of chef associations founded in Paris, France in 1928.

The 3 participants were M. Hafiz Farhan Syafawi from SLB-B Pembina Palembang, South Sumatra and Made Agus Ari Purnawan from SLB Negeri 2 Denpasar, Bali who won gold medals. Meanwhile, the silver medal was won by Nurul Hikmah of Pembina State SLB-C, Banjarbaru City, South Kalimantan.

To take part in this event, the three participants had previously gone through three stages of coaching and selection and were selected among the winners of the 2022 Competency Competition for Students with Special Needs (LKS-PDBK) organized by the Indonesian Center for Talent Development ( BPTI).

This prestigious event was attended by several countries involving professional chefs and hospitality students, as well as involving more than 80 judges from outside and inside the country. Furthermore, this event was organized and supported by Indonesia Pastry Alliance (IPA), Association of Culinary Professionals Indonesia (ACPI) and Young Chef Club Indonesia (YCCI).

Participants were given two hours to make and decorate a 30cm diameter cake according to their creativity. With their creations, the three PDBKs won two gold medals and one silver medal.

Not only that, they also get the highest score in the class Dress up the cake and in front of the other participants from China. This international competition is generally open without discrimination between participants on the basis of particular needs.

Previously, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology (Kemendikbudristek) through the National Achievement Center (Puspresnas) sent the three participants to the class Dress up the cake that is, decorate the cake with a time of two hours and a diameter of 30 cm.

Previous participants received three levels of construction. This construction was made by a team from the Indonesia Pastry Alliance (IPA) led by chef Ucu Sawitri.

Chef Ucu Sawitri, as a coach, also conveyed his hopes to the attendees. “Children compete not with children with special needs, but with professional chefs and hospitality students. I hope that through this competition the children also gain valuable experience and create independence,” he said on Monday, July 31, 2023 from the National Achievement Center website.

Acting head of Puspresnas Kemendikbudristek Hendarman congratulated the students on their achievements. “Congratulations to my children for winning two gold and one silver medal. It is a proud achievement and I hope this achievement becomes an inspiration for Indonesian children,” he said.
